Tangled, Bird Print

Title: Tangled
Series: The Illustrated Rhinoceros Sutra 

A vibrant orange bird with a black mask is attached to a bamboo branch. It's unclear if the bird did this on purpose or if this was some sort of accident or oversight. Regardless, the bird is unconcerned by being tangled up to with the bamboo. Perhaps it provides a sense of safety.

The bird sits forward on the branch with its reddish-orange tail feathers showing below the bamboo. It mixes with the dark circular arrangement of leaves behind it. Bands and strands of bamboo leaves hug the bird onto the bamboo. While its body faces forward, its head is turned to show a striking profile. There are highlighted feathers in yellow and a sepia-toned pointed beak. 

It's a subtle form of drama in this piece as the diagonal and circular compositional motion is arrested by the wrapped bird. Much of the drama comes from the diagonals and the contrasting, chiaroscuro lighting.
