Renouncing Violence was inspired by the 1st stanza of the Rhinoceros Sutra, as translated from the Pali by Thanissaro Bhikkhu. Artist Ashli Kingfisher and I began working on ideas for an illustrated version of the sutra. This is one of two preliminary oil paintings for that project. The project is now being created through digital means due to restrictions of the COVID pandemic. Shed Concern and Renouncing Violence are the only two oil paintings I completed for this before we were locked down and I was no longer able to safely paint with oils.
