Series: Stellae Errantes / Wandering Stars
This one is a love story with personal meaning. It's inspired by Pluto (AKA Hades) and Proserpina (AKA Persephone) as well as by the dwarf planet that used to be a full-fledged planet. Planet-wise, I decided to paint Pluto this way because its moon, Charon, is large enough relative to Pluto that they orbit each other in a way as Pluto orbits the sun.
The larger elephant represents Pluto, being held back inside the darker portion of the painting by the hard straight line of paint. Proserpina, so small by comparison, is free to wander through her lighter and more colorful world. Even though they are in two very separate planes of existence or expanses of time (or seasons for my mythology lovers here), they are part of the same painting and eternally joined.
The personal part of this painting is that I painted this shortly after my grandmother died. She was a spitfire who loved animals and her husband, my grandfather. He died many years ago. He was the only man she ever kissed and his death wrenched my stalwart grandmother something awful. Somehow, even though he already crossed over, they were still connected, him in whatever afterlife they both believed in and her alive and tending to plants and animals above ground.
When she died, it felt like the fire of existence in general dimmed. I had to paint my loss and put her back together with the love of her life.
