Title: Makemake
Series: Stellae Errantes / Wandering Stars

Original oil painting by Sarah Soward. Oil on canvas. 36x36 inches, unframed. The canvas is stretched on 1.5 inch stretcher bars and is gallery wrapped.

Makemake is part of the Stellae Errantes (Wandering Stars) series. Makemake is a deity of Rapa Nui (Easter Island). He is regarded as an all-powerful creator. Images of Makemake located so far are carved into stone.

A dwarf planet in the Kuiper Belt is named after Makemake. The planet is described on NASA.gov as being reddish-brown in color. Most of the objects in the Kuiper Belt are icy, rocky bodies.

This painting is meant to be a powerful elephant emerging from the depths of either space or water, viewers' choice of island reference or astronomy reference. I endeavored to make the surface of the elephant's skin look reddish-brown and reminiscent of a rock-like surface. The background is very dark on purpose so that the tie in between space and ocean/water is easy to make. The colors shift from black to blue to green. The use of paint in other areas of the elephant include watery overlays and intentional drips because Makemake, the deity, is associated an island and islets which are all land masses surrounded by water.

Because Makemake is a dwarf planet, the elephant in this piece is an Asian elephant, rather than an African elephant. All my paintings of dwarf planets feature Asian elephants, with their smaller ears and petite tusks or no tusks at all.

Please keep fine art and prints out of direct sunlight and UV light.

Original Art will be shipped from the art studio in California.

Limited Edtion Prints (while supplies last) will be shipped from the art studio in California.

Open Edition Prints are made-to-order prints. Most of these are printed in a trusted print house near you and shipped directly to you from there.
This is more ecologically friendly. It also keeps international shipping costs down for Open Edition Prints because they are not necessarily shipped from the U.S.

LUNAR CODEX

My Artwork on the Moon

Luna, my triple-rhino painting honoring Earth's moon, is going to reside in the Southern Polar Region of that very same moon. My art is not only international, but extra-terrestrial.

Luna is part of The Polaris Collection, payload GM1, going to the moon with the Astrobotic Griffin Mission 1. Enormous thanks to Samuel Peralta and NASA for making this possible.

Inspiration

I love the natural world! Through my artwork, I seek to honor it and encourage others to love, protect, and conserve it too.

A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of my artwork is donated to the International Rhino Foundation.

Image Reference

I work primarily from my own photographs of animals, wildlife, and nature. While I paint and create artowrk in my indoor art studio, I gather most of my inspiration outside. I combine any number of photographs along with and my (over-active?) imagination to create my artwork.

"Absolutely Beautiful! I never really looked at rhinos as a beautiful animal...But when you paint them, you make them look so majestic and beautiful but still big and muscular. And let me say maybe peaceful. No one is there to bother them. It's like I see them truly free and happy!!"

Hey Sarah, we hung the painting in our dining room. We had other plans for it, but decided we wanted to be able to look at it often. So, here I sit, having a cup of coffee while enjoying it. Cheers!
