Original oil painting by Sarah Soward.
Oil on canvas.
36x36 inches.
The canvas is stretched on 1.5 inch stretcher bars.

Pluto and Proserpina is part of the Stellae Errantes (Wandering Stars) series. Since Pluto's moon, Charon, is so large that it creates a binary system with Pluto, there are two elephants and two deities represented. This piece is a little more abstract expressionist through the background and terrain than it is surreal. It is meant to depict love, unity, and difference, inspired by stories of Pluto and Prosperpina (similar to their Greek counterparts, Hades and Persephone).

The elephants in this piece are Asian elephants, rather than African elephants. At the time this was painted, Pluto was a dwarf planet. I decided that all my paintings of dwarf planets would be Asian elephants, with their smaller ears and petite tusks.

Please keep fine art and prints out of direct sunlight and UV light.
