Journey through the first hundred days of shelter-in-place through clever illustrations, relatable stories, and relevant social commentary.

Written by Sarah Soward

Self-Portraits of the Apocalypse: Shelter-in-Place started out as a digital drawing journal on my blog to help keep my head above water when coronavirus lockdown began. It turned into a 100 day pandemic adventure. While my world burned, I wrote and made digital art cartoons about coping mechanisms, protective face masks, COVID (of course), protests, literal near-drowning, isolation, mental health, and my apocalypse wardrobe.

The best part is that it helped more than just me.

Self-Portraits of the Apocalypse includes over 100 digital drawings and images and daily professionally edited blog-style journal entries.

"Sarah Soward's Self-Portraits of the Apocalypse is an amazing depiction of a young woman's journey through the management of depression during the pandemic. There's a creativity and playfulness about her choices to cope. Her skills as an illustrator brought me into her world in a way that made me want to put my arms around her beautiful heart. I found myself cheering for her abilities to cope, inspired by her courage to take on each day and so grateful for her transparency. Sarah put words to what so many endure in addition to these unpredictable times. This is a must read for hope and a special soul's determination to endure."

    LUNAR CODEX

    My Artwork on the Moon

Luna, my triple-rhino painting honoring Earth's moon, is going to reside in the Southern Polar Region of that very same moon. My art is not only international, but extra-terrestrial.

Luna is part of The Polaris Collection, payload GM1, going to the moon with the Astrobotic Griffin Mission 1. Enormous thanks to Samuel Peralta and NASA for making this possible.

    Inspiration

I love the natural world! Through my artwork, I seek to honor it and encourage others to love, protect, and conserve it too.

A percentage of the proceeds from the sale of my artwork is donated to the International Rhino Foundation.

    Image Reference

I work primarily from my own photographs of animals, wildlife, and nature. While I paint and create artowrk in my indoor art studio, I gather most of my inspiration outside. I combine any number of photographs along with and my (over-active?) imagination to create my artwork.

"Absolutely Beautiful! I never really looked at rhinos as a beautiful animal...But when you paint them, you make them look so majestic and beautiful but still big and muscular. And let me say maybe peaceful. No one is there to bother them. It's like I see them truly free and happy!!"

Hey Sarah, we hung the painting in our dining room. We had other plans for it, but decided we wanted to be able to look at it often. So, here I sit, having a cup of coffee while enjoying it. Cheers!
