Mars Gradivus, Original oil painting
Original oil painting by Sarah Soward.
Oil on canvas.
36x36 inches, unframed.
The canvas is stretched on 1.5 inch stretcher bars and is gallery wrapped.
Mars Gradivus is part of the Stellae Errantes (Wandering Stars) series. The painting depicts a young African elephant inspired by both the planet and the deity Mars. This manifestation of the Roman god of war is the general who leads the charge at the head of the troops, both leading and fighting, always ready. The use of red was inspired by Mars' nickname, the red planet, and the colorful markings on the trunk that would normally denote wrinkles are made as war paint or a representation of armor.
