Original oil painting by Sarah Soward. Oil on panel. 10x10 inches, unframed.

Deimos and Phobos is part of my Rhino Moons series. It's a subset of paintings that belong to my larger series, Wandering Stars, that focuses on portraying cosmic bodies and the entities they are named after in the guise of wildlife.

Deimos and Phobos are moons of Mars. Deimos is the god of terror or fear and Phobos of panic. I decided not to separate the sons of Mars, so I made two paintings. This one focuses on Deimos and shows a visual representation of the feeling of terror that god in rhino-form carries with him. It shows what the feeling of deep dread feels like to perhaps protect the owner from those very feelings. Art can make us strong.

I tend to count this painting as Surrealism inside the realm of contemporary wildlife art.

Please keep fine art and prints out of direct sunlight and UV light.

Wildlife art is a language of love, hope, and determination.

I painted my first rhino in 1999. There is no stopping me.
