Soward wanted the elephant that is Earth to have a little swagger and sway. Since Earth is the planet we live on, she wanted it feel like we are part of it and are welcome in the painting. To aid in that invitation, she used a compositional technique that she doesn’t employ often. She gave the back view of the elephant, as if we’re following along behind Mother Earth. Terra Mater turns part way to see if we’re really still back there and, perhaps, contemplates offering us her tail.

Soward kept her wrinkles deep because they made her think of tectonic plates allowing "gentle" movement. There’s a bit of weather forming the distance and Terra Mater walks in life-giving misty moisture.

This landscape is based off photos Soward took on a balloon ride over the Masai Mara in Kenya. Most of the dark dots are trees and shrubs, a few of them are animals.
