Sol invictus

Status: Sold
Dimensions: 36x36 inches
Medium: Oil on canvas
Inspiration: Sol Invictus, Roman deity and our sun

Sol Invictus, or Unconquered Sun, is the first painting completed in the Stellae Errantes series. The elephant, as the Roman warrior god called Sol, emerges. Soward thought of segmented and scaled armor when painting the trunk. She looked into heliophysics while planning the painting and that brought her to space weather. The idea of visually representing a solar storm was just too tempting. So the sun is directly surrounded by and moving or generating clouds rather than merely shining through them from a great distance. The sun, much like an elephant, has great impact on its environment.
